Male pattern hair loss, also known as androgenic alopecia, is the most common form of hair loss in men. Often beginning after puberty, it typically presents as a receding hairline or thinning on the scalp.
This condition affects around 30% of men by age 30 and 50% by age 50. While it is a normal part of aging, for some men, especially those who experience it early or more extensively, it can lead to significant emotional distress.
Although this pattern of hair loss can also occur in females, we do not provide this treatment for females through our prescription service to ensure safety.
.
Male pattern hair loss is primarily due to a mix of hormonal and genetic factors. The hormone testosterone is converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes hair follicles to shrink, leading to hair thinning and loss over time.
This process can vary in severity among individuals and is often more noticeable in those with a family history of male pattern hair loss, which can be inherited from either parent.
This medication works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to male hair loss by shrinking hair follicles. By reducing DHT levels in the scalp, hair loss can be slowed, and hair growth may be encouraged. Note that this treatment only affects hair growth on the scalp, not other areas of the body.
In Ireland, medications are licensed for specific uses by the Irish Health Products Regulatory Authority. “Off-licence” means a medication is used for a purpose not originally specified in its licence. This particular medication is licensed for prostate treatment but is widely recognized at a lower dose to treat hair loss in men.
If preferred, a licensed 1 mg version is also available and can be requested through your secure patient account.
- Dosage: Take a daily dose of 1.25 mg orally. We provide 5 mg tablets, which can be divided into quarters using a tablet cutter (available at pharmacies).
- Prescription Details: The prescription includes 46 tablets, enough for six months when quartered.
- Treatment Duration: It may take 3-6 months of continuous use to see results. If no improvement occurs after 12 months, it’s unlikely this treatment will be effective and should be discontinued.
There is no cure for male pattern hair loss. However, we provide treatment options that can help prevent further hair loss and may encourage growth, based on clinical suitability.
This treatment does not restore significant hair that has already been lost and only maintains results while the medication is being taken. Benefits will be lost within six months of stopping treatment.
Yes, other factors can contribute to hair loss, including stress, illnesses, certain medications, cancer treatments, and some hairstyles. Hair loss from these causes may be temporary or permanent. If you’re concerned about another cause, please speak with a doctor.
Our service is specifically for male pattern hair loss and does not address other types of hair loss.
Side effects are generally uncommon and mild but may include:
- Rash
- Erectile Dysfunction: A small number of men (less than 3%) may experience this. It typically resolves on its own but may, in rare cases, persist even after stopping the medication.
- Decreased Libido: Similar to erectile dysfunction, this side effect is uncommon and often temporary.
- Breast Tenderness: Tenderness around the nipple area may occur.
- Mood Changes: Low mood or, very rarely, suicidal thoughts. If you notice any change or decline in your mood, seek medical advice.
If you experience any changes in breast tissue, such as lumps, discharge, swelling, or pain, please consult a doctor, as there have been rare reports of breast cancer in men taking this medication.
If you develop any side effects, even if not listed here, stop taking the medication and seek medical advice. Always read the patient information leaflet provided with your medication.
Be sure to follow the recommendations and consult a professional if you have any questions or concerns. Your well-being is our priority.
