Cystitis Treatments Available at AMAE Clinic

Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder, most often caused by infection. This condition is more common in women due to a shorter urethra, which allows bacteria like E. coli to reach the bladder more easily.

Our cystitis treatments at AMAE Clinic typically use nitrofuran antibiotics, which effectively target the infection.

Important Note:
As an online consultation service, AMAE Clinic follows strict guidelines when prescribing antibiotics for potential urine infections to ensure safe and appropriate treatment. For this reason, our cystitis treatment service is exclusively available for female patients.

Additional Information:

  • We prescribe generic medications for greater availability.
  • Please check your dispensed prescription at the pharmacy, as no changes can be made afterward.

UTIs occur when bacteria enter the urethra or bladder. The most common cause of female cystitis is E. coli bacteria, often from the bowel.

Types of UTIs:

  • Kidney Infection (Pyelonephritis): Requires prompt medical assessment.
  • Bladder Infection (Cystitis): Often caused by infection and is common in women.
  • Urethral Infection (Urethritis): Can mimic cystitis but is often caused by inflammation.

Cystitis is inflammation of the bladder, most commonly caused by infection. This service specifically treats female cystitis. It is not suitable for other urinary tract infections like Pyelonephritis or Urethritis.

  • Painful urination (burning, stinging)
  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Urgent need to pass urine
  • Cloudy, dark, or foul-smelling urine
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Blood in urine (consult a doctor if present)
  • Feverish symptoms (unwell and a high temperature)

If you feel unwell or have blood in your urine, this service is not suitable, and you should see a GP.

  • Sexual activity
  • Improper wiping (back to front instead of front to back)
  • Being over 65 (UTIs are common in this age group)
  • Pregnancy
  • Certain contraceptive methods (diaphragm/spermicide)
  • Diabetes or weak immune system

Not always. Mild cystitis can improve without antibiotics, typically within 5 days. You can manage symptoms with:

  • Pain relief (paracetamol, ibuprofen)
  • Cystopurin sachets (over-the-counter)
  • Drink plenty of water (min. 2.5 liters)
  • Hot water bottles for comfort

If symptoms persist after 48 hours, antibiotics may be needed.

If clinically appropriate, we can prescribe nitrofuran antibiotics. This treatment should begin working within 24 hours.

Side effects are rare, but may include:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Decreased appetite
  • Headaches

The antibiotic may also cause your urine to turn dark yellow/brown, which is harmless and will resolve once the treatment is stopped.

  • If you have recurrent cystitis or UTIs
  • If you don’t respond to treatment within 48 hours
  • If you become very unwell (fever, vomiting, back pain)
  • If you have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) or eGFR below 45 mL/min

Yes, overuse of antibiotics can lead to resistance, making the treatment less effective. This is why we carefully assess the need for antibiotics before prescribing. Only take antibiotics when medically necessary to avoid increasing bacterial resistance.
