Hypothyroidism Treatments Available at AMAE Clinic 💊
Hypothyroidism occurs when your thyroid gland produces insufficient thyroid hormone (thyroxine), which slows down metabolism and can lead to symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, dry skin/hair, muscle aches, and low mood.
While hypothyroidism cannot be prevented, it can be effectively managed with medication to replace the missing thyroxine. At AMAE Clinic, we offer a 6-month prescription service for hypothyroidism treatment, where clinically appropriate, making it convenient to manage your thyroid health.
Our Hypothyroidism Treatment:
- Oral Thyroid Hormone (T4): Available as a tablet to help restore thyroxine levels.
Note: We prescribe generic medicines to ensure maximum availability. Please check your prescription at the pharmacy, as changes cannot be made after dispensing.

The thyroid gland, located in the neck, produces the hormones Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3), which control metabolism and are essential for various bodily functions. The release of these hormones is regulated by Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) from the pituitary gland, which adjusts T3 and T4 levels to maintain balance.
Hypothyroidism, or an “underactive thyroid,” occurs when the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough T3 and T4. This slows down body functions, leading to symptoms such as:
- Fatigue
- Weight gain
- Dry skin/hair
- Muscle aches
- Low mood
In Ireland, the most frequent cause is Autoimmune Thyroiditis, where the immune system attacks the thyroid, impairing its function. Other causes may include:
- Previous thyroid surgery or treatments (e.g., radiation)
- Iodine deficiency (rare in Ireland)
- Medication side effects
- Congenital hypothyroidism (present from birth)
- Pituitary gland issues (affecting thyroid regulation)
Subclinical hypothyroidism occurs when TSH levels are elevated, but T3 and T4 levels are normal. Treatment varies based on age, symptoms, and TSH levels, and should be discussed with a doctor.
Without treatment, hypothyroidism can lead to unpleasant symptoms and increase the risk of heart disease due to elevated cholesterol levels.
AMAE Clinic offers Thyroid Hormone (T4) tablets to replace the thyroxine your thyroid isn’t producing. These tablets are generally taken daily and require regular blood tests to ensure proper dosing. Note: We do not prescribe T3 or other thyroid medications via this service.
T4 tablets are taken daily and typically for life. We recommend annual thyroid function tests to monitor treatment, or more frequent tests if symptoms change, you’re planning pregnancy, or become pregnant. TSH levels guide dosing adjustments to maintain proper thyroid balance.
Side effects are usually due to an excessively high dose and may include:
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea
- Headaches
- Sweating or flushing
- Tremors or shaking
- Weight loss
- Palpitations or chest tightness
- Insomnia or restlessness
Most side effects resolve when the dose is adjusted. Be sure to read the patient leaflet for complete details.
Hypothyroidism can impact fertility, so if you’re planning to conceive, ensure your thyroid levels are stable. If you become pregnant, your thyroid treatment may need adjustments, and regular testing is essential to avoid complications, such as anaemia or pre-eclampsia. Always consult your doctor as soon as pregnancy is confirmed.
There is no specific diet for hypothyroidism, but adequate iodine intake is essential for thyroid health. In Ireland, most people get enough iodine from their diet, so no special supplements are usually required.
Our advice:
- Eat a balanced diet with fresh, unprocessed foods
- Limit alcohol to recommended levels
- Avoid fad diets unless advised by your doctor
A healthy lifestyle and regular exercise support thyroid function and overall well-being.
