Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction caused by the immune system overreacting to an allergen. It typically begins within seconds or minutes of exposure and can escalate quickly.

Common Symptoms:

  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat.
  • Itchy, raised rash (hives).
  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing.
  • Rapid heartbeat.
  • Fainting or collapsing due to low blood pressure.

Triggers of anaphylaxis include:

  • Foods: Nuts, shellfish, eggs.
  • Medications: Antibiotics, NSAIDs (e.g., aspirin).
  • Insect stings: Bees, wasps, ants.
  • Medical substances: Anesthetics, contrast dyes.
  • Latex: Rubber gloves, balloons.

In some cases, no specific trigger is identified; this is known as Idiopathic Anaphylaxis.

Immediate treatment involves an injection of adrenaline using a pre-filled adrenaline pen. Adrenaline works to:

  • Reduce swelling.
  • Improve breathing.
  • Restore blood pressure.

If symptoms persist or worsen after the first dose, a second injection may be needed. Always call 999 or 112 for an ambulance after administering adrenaline, even if symptoms improve.

We can prescribe adrenaline pens for individuals who meet our clinical criteria.

Adrenaline Pen Brands Available in Ireland:
