Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition affecting up to 1 in 5 children and 1 in 10 adults in Ireland. It leads to dry, cracked, painful, red, and itchy patches of skin, caused by the skin’s inability to retain moisture.

Eczema often occurs alongside other conditions like hay fever or asthma and can significantly affect quality of life.

  • The exact cause of eczema is not fully understood, but several factors may contribute:

    • Genetics: A family history of eczema, hay fever, or asthma increases your risk.
    • Weakened skin barrier function: Makes the skin more prone to dryness and irritation.
    • Immune system responses: Overactive inflammatory or allergic reactions can trigger flares.

Eczema encompasses various skin conditions, including:

  1. Atopic Eczema: Chronic and linked with other atopic conditions like asthma or hay fever.
  2. Contact Dermatitis: Triggered by direct contact with irritants or allergens.
  3. Discoid Eczema: Round or oval-shaped patches of inflamed skin.
  4. Varicose Eczema: Occurs due to poor blood circulation, especially in the legs.
  5. Seborrhoeic Eczema: Affects areas like the nose, brows, and scalp with scaly red patches.
  6. Dyshidrotic Eczema (Pompholyx): Characterized by small, itchy blisters on the hands or feet.

Note: AMAE Clinic can treat atopic eczema and contact dermatitis only.

  • Triggers vary from person to person but may include:

    • Irritants: Soaps, detergents, shampoos, or perfumes.
    • Environmental factors: Dust, animal dander, pollen, or temperature changes.
    • Stress: Emotional or physical stress and exhaustion.
    • Hormonal changes: During menstrual cycles or pregnancy.
    • Infections: Viral or bacterial infections.

Here are some tips to help maintain your skin health:

  • Use an unfragranced moisturizer 2–6 times daily, especially during flares.
  • Avoid harsh soaps, bubble baths, and shower gels.
  • Wear loose, cotton clothing.
  • Use sensitive-skin detergents for laundry.
  • Stay hydrated to keep your skin healthy.

Although eczema has no cure, treatments can help manage symptoms and maintain healthy skin.

1. Moisturizers (Emollients):

  • Essential for daily skin care, even when the skin is in good condition.
  • Helps soften hard skin, reduce itching, and enhance the effects of other treatments.
  • Tip: Apply moisturizers before any other treatments, allowing 30 minutes to dry.

2. Topical Corticosteroids (Creams/Ointments):

  • Reduces inflammation and calms flare-ups.
  • Available in varying strengths (mild to very potent).
  • Should only be used short-term and under medical supervision to prevent side effects like skin thinning or discoloration.

3. Oral Antihistamines:

  • Blocks histamine to reduce itching and discomfort.
  • Can cause drowsiness; best taken at night.

Eczema can become infected when bacteria or viruses enter cracked skin. Signs of infection include:

  • Worsening symptoms or fluid oozing from the skin.
  • Yellow crusts or spots.
  • Fever or feeling unwell.

If you suspect infection, this service is not suitable. Please book an urgent consultation with a GP.

Eczema herpeticum occurs when eczema becomes infected with the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). It is rare but serious, especially if it spreads over large areas of the skin.

Symptoms:

  • Painful blisters or clusters with red, black, or purple coloring.
  • Oozing blisters and high fever.
  • Swollen lymph nodes.

Important: If you suspect eczema herpeticum, seek immediate medical attention.
